Philip and Judith Toy
Philip and Judith began meditating in the 1970's. From the time they first fell in love, they knew they would continue to hold hands on the spiritual path. They are the founders of three sanghas, or congregations, in the US -- Old Path Sangha in Pennsylvania, Fragrant Lotus Petal Sangha in a medium security prison in Pennsylvania, and the eleven-year-old Cloud Cottage Community of Mindful Living in Western North Carolina. The names given to them by Thich Nhat Hanh are Philip, True Mountain of Insight, and Judith, True Door of Peace. As ordained members of Thich Nhat Hanh's Order of Interbeing, or Tiep Hien, they have led retreats in Pennsylvania, Florida, Mississippi, Arizona, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Ireland and Scotland. The murders of three of Judith's family (see "Murder as a Call to Love," Best Buddhist Writing 2006) and the death of Philip's son have strengthened the couple's mindfulness practice. Both are writers and editors. Recently, they launched a small book publishing press, Cloud Cottage Editions. Judith's book, Murder as a Call to Love, A True Story of Transformation and Forgiveness, published under the Cloud Cottage Editions imprint, is available now at http://www.murderasacalltolove.com.
